Junior rowers Poppy, Phoebe and Lula gave an outstanding performance at this years British Junior National Championships held at Strathclyde Country Park outside Glasgow. This competition is for the top juniors in the country and I’m delighted to say that Exeter has three of these.
All three girls had 1500 m time trials on the Saturday morning under pretty dire windy conditions (which suspended play at St Andrews I believe).
Poppy Bowyer was 15th in her time trial and then third (9.09.2) in an extremely tight C final for girls in the WJ18 age group on Saturday (she’s a WJ17 and there were 46 in the event). The conditions for her race were horrendous from 500m -1500m!
Her sister Tallulah (Lula) won the time trial in her event, WJ14 1x (15 Competitors) on the Saturday then won her semi final on Sunday from which the A and B finals were seeded. She won the A final in a time of 8.36.2.
Phoebe Campbell competed in the WJ15 1x (22 competitors) She was third in her time trial on Saturday, second in her semi final on Sunday and won her final in 8.23.3. Conditions on Sunday were more favourable with less wind disrupting the lake. Lula and Phoebe’s gold medals were presented by Sarah Winkless.
A bonus for Exeter is that the girls’ points placed them 7th out of 32 clubs in the Victrix Victor Ludorum. Great position for such a small team. Exeter can be very proud of them, their coaches and families for all their support, these juniors are inspiring even the next generation of rowers and the older generation too!
