The National Schools Regatta is the most competitive regatta in the junior calendar. Phoebe Campbell and Lula Bowyer both raced in the WJ15 1x event, although Lula is actually in the WJ14 age group. There were forty five entries and all the girls took part in a time trial to determine who would take part in the three semi-finals. Phoebe won the time trial with Lula finishing eleventh. The finalists were the first and second girls in each of the semi-finals.
Phoebe had a good start in her semi-final, which she controlled from the front, finishing first. Lula had a good start but had to push really hard to come from third to second and a well-earned place in the final. In the final Phoebe had her nose in front at halfway with the Reading Sculler pushing her hard. The race changed hands several times with the Reading sculler winning by two feet and Phoebe winning a silver medal to add to her bronze from the Junior Inter Regional Regatta. No medal for Lula this time but a very creditable fourth place considering she was sculling up a year.
Look out for both girls at the National Championships where Lula can scull in her own age group, and hopefully win another gold medal to go with her Junior Inter Regional gold.
