Squads at Exeter Rowing Club
At Exeter Rowing Club, our squads are designed to give every rower a clear place to belong and a pathway to progress. Whether you’re chasing performance goals, balancing training around work and life, or discovering rowing for the first time, our squad structure supports ambition, enjoyment and long-term development.
Each squad has defined training expectations, coaching support and competition opportunities, while sharing the same club values: respect, commitment and a positive team culture.
Performance Squad
The Performance Squad is for committed rowers training regularly and aiming to compete at regional and national events.
Rowers in this squad follow a structured, high-quality training programme with a strong focus on technical excellence, physical development and race preparation. Expectations include consistent attendance, winter training commitment and a proactive approach to performance improvement.
This squad is ideal for athletes who are motivated, competitive and keen to push themselves in a supportive but demanding environment.
Club Squad
The Club Squad offers structured coaching and regular training for adult rowers who want to improve, race and be part of a crewed environment without the intensity of a full performance programme.
This squad suits novice rowers and those with limited time, it offers purposeful training and competition at local and regional events. Sessions focus on skill development, fitness and building confident, capable crews.
Masters Squad
The Masters Squad is for rowers who wish to train for and race in crews targeting age-category races (available for ages 27+).
Training is designed to be challenging but sustainable, with an emphasis on technique, fitness and longevity in the sport. Masters rowers often compete at both national and international head races and regattas.
Junior Squad
The Junior Squad provides a safe, supportive and structured environment for young people to learn and develop in rowing.
Junior rowers are introduced to strong technical foundations, teamwork and water safety, with coaching that supports both enjoyment and progression. As skills and confidence grow, rowers can access development opportunities and competition appropriate to their age and experience.
We place a strong emphasis on welfare, safeguarding and positive experiences, helping juniors build confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of the sport.
