It’s with great sadness that we have to report t It’s with great sadness that we have to report that Dave Woods passed away this morning following a stroke yesterday.

From Paul Wilson and Kevin Dentith:

Dave joined ERC from Plymouth in the late 1980’s. I think he started with the men’s novice / Senior C squad. When he stopped racing, he started to coach the men’s Novice squad with various degrees of success. It wasn’t long before he took over as Club Secretary, a position he held for many years. He also became involved with the Regatta and for over 25 years he was the secretary dealing with the race entries and sorting out the race program, a major role he carried out until 2022. For a short period of time, Dave was one of the Club’s first Welfare Officers. He was also one of the Trustees for the Club’s Trust fund a position he held right up to his death. In recognition of his contributions and service to the Club, Dave was made a Life Member at the AGM in 2021 and at our last AGM he was made President of the Club, a position which sadly he wasn’t able to see through for a full term.
In addition to what he did for ERC, he also held two positions in WEARA. Firstly, while at Plymouth, he was the Honorary Secretary of WEARA. After becoming an umpire, he eventually took over as Chairman of the Umpires Panel, a role which involved coordinating the Umpires to officiate at our regattas. In addition to those roles, he also organised a number of the National Police Rowing Championships when they were held in our region.
Dave will be remembered for putting so much back into the sport we all enjoy and he will be greatly missed by all of us he knew him.

May he rest in peace.
